"Caitlin" iain Oughtred Whilly Tern.
After I had scratched my boat building itch with polythene Pam I decided I wanted to go on to better things. I was still a little nervous about my abilities, so I enrolled on the Modern Boat-building Course at the Lyme Regis School of Boat Building, now the Boat Building Academy. The five day course was taught by the late Jack Chippendale who carefully took us through the basics of Clinker Ply and Cold Moulding techniques, but interestingly not strip-plank which he refused to cover leaving Dick Phillips the head instructor to cover that bit. Jack is one of the people who doesn't believe in sheathing boats with glass, one of the others is Iain Oughtred.
Eager to use my new skills and confidence I wrote to Iain Oughtred asking for a set of his Whilly Boat plans. Iain sent the plans but said that he was just in the process of re-drawing the plans, he felt that although the boat was designed to be as good under oars as sails, most people preferred to sail and found them a little tippy, did I want to use the new drawings instead?
Now when Iain O says he thinks he can improve on one of his own designs it would take a bigger fool than me to say no thanks. Although they appear very similar the Whilly Boat and the Whilly Tern are in fact very different boats. Iain was in the process of re-drawing all his double enders and the Whily Tern is a smaller version of the Artic Tern. She is broader on the waterline giving her a bit more stability and has much more curvaceous lines.
